If you’re considering gold bar investment in India, start with the amount you’ll pay at checkout, not the rate on a board. A 1g or 10g 24K bar costs the gold value plus GST, a seller premium and possibly delivery. Later, a buyer may offer less than the day’s benchmark. On a 1g purchase, each extra rupee takes a bigger bite per gram.

As a dated reference, the IBJA 999 gold PM rate on 14 October 2026 was ₹1,46,064 per 10g, excluding GST and making charges. At that rate, a 1g bar starts at ₹14,606.40 and a 10g bar at ₹1,46,064 before tax and extras. These are worked examples, not today’s shop prices.

Gold bar investment in India: calculating 1g and 10g costs

Calculate (benchmark value + taxable seller premium) × 1.03 + delivery when the premium forms part of the taxable gold supply. If the displayed total includes GST, don’t add it again. The market rate alone won’t tell you the final bill.

The CBIC GST rate schedule lists gold under heading 7108 at 3%. Applying that rate to the IBJA benchmark alone gives this floor:

“Gold rates exclude 3% GST and making charges.” – India Bullion and Jewellers Association

Still to add

1g

₹14,606.40

₹438.19

₹15,044.59

Seller premium, taxable GST on that premium where applicable, delivery

10g

₹1,46,064.00

₹4,381.92

₹1,50,445.92

Seller premium, taxable GST on that premium where applicable, delivery

For 10g on the 14 October 2026 benchmark, the calculation comes to ₹1,50,445.92 plus the seller’s premium and delivery. That’s a starting figure, not a retail quote. Use a newer figure from the India gold rate page when comparing shops, and match the timestamp and purity.

A dated seller quote, not a permanent price

A 1g MMTC-PAMP Lotus 24K (999.9) bar was listed at ₹15,990 on this Flipkart product listing, observed 15 October 2026. The quote and the previous day’s IBJA close are not simultaneous, so their difference cannot tell you the seller’s markup. The listing also leaves the checkout tax and delivery breakup unclear. Use the itemised payable amount when you’re ready to buy.

Why a 1g bar often costs more per gram

Fabrication, sealed cards and handling don’t cost one-tenth as much on a 1g bar as they do on a 10g bar. Divide the final payable amount by the grams of fine gold to compare gold bullion in India. A 1g bar makes a manageable Diwali gift; a 10g bar can spread fixed packing and shipping costs across more gold. Compare the payable amounts before assuming either is cheaper per gram.

Purity is part of the calculation

24K 999 means 999 parts gold per thousand; 999.9 means 999.9 parts per thousand. Don’t base a 24K purchase calculation on an advertised 22K rate. Read the stated fineness, weight and refiner or seller details, and keep the invoice identifying your bar. A sealed assay card helps identify it at resale, though the next buyer still sets the offer.

Tax, packaging, delivery and storage

Write down the seller’s gold rate, minting or packaging premium, GST and delivered total. If delivery appears as a separate service, use its checkout amount and tax treatment rather than applying the gold formula to that fee. Then account for the locker cost, or the security trade-off of keeping a bar at home. Store the invoice with the packaging for resale.

The resale spread: what you actually get back

Sealed gold bar and vaulted gold balance with a receipt illustrating the buy and sell gap

The rate on a screen is no promise of a cash offer. Your buy-to-sell spread is the difference between your total purchase cost and the dealer’s net offer when you sell. You may not recover GST or premiums. Testing, damaged packaging and a different dealer can also change the offer.

Put the purchase total next to a dealer’s buyback offer before you commit:

  1. Include delivery and expected storage in your purchase cost.

  2. Get a buyback offer for the same weight and purity. Include deductions and ask whether the dealer accepts bars bought elsewhere.

  3. Subtract the net offer from your total cost. Gold would need to rise enough to close that gap for you to break even, assuming the dealer prices buybacks the same way later.

A seller quote and an earlier benchmark-plus-GST figure can differ for several reasons: gold prices move, and sellers package tax and charges in different ways. That difference is not your profit or loss. For an exit comparison, use a purchase total and buyback offer from the same time.

Physical gold bar or vaulted digital gold?

Think about who holds the gold, how much you must buy and how you can sell it. Gold ETFs and gold mutual funds are other gold investments; neither puts a bar in your hand. For a long term goal, weigh their fund charges and redemption route against physical storage and buyback.

OroPocket is not a seller of physical gold bars. You can buy 24K digital gold from ₹1 with UPI, hold it in insured vault custody and set up a daily, weekly or monthly SIP. Purchases and SIP instalments also earn Bitcoin cashback in Satoshis. If you want metal in hand later, OroPocket offers physical coin delivery, subject to the delivery quote and product terms. You cannot use that route to buy a 1g or 10g bar today. Compare the app’s buy and sell quotes and delivery charges with a bar dealer’s purchase and buyback quotes.

An app-held gold balance isn’t a SEBI-regulated security. SEBI’s digital gold press release says digital gold sits outside its jurisdiction, unlike a gold ETF. Planning a kilo-scale holding? The 1kg gold price cost breakdown covers it; a 1g retail premium won’t scale neatly to that size.

A practical buying check before you pay

  • Choose the weight and purity first. Then compare final price per fine gram for the same weight; a 999.9 1g bar and a 22K coin are different purchases.

  • Save the dated quote and itemised tax invoice. Match the description, fineness and weight on the package to the paperwork.

  • Ask for the written buyback basis, including testing and packaging deductions. A promise to “buy back gold” is no guaranteed price.

  • Make room for storage in the decision. If keeping a tiny bar safe feels like a chore, a vaulted balance may suit you better.

The bottom line

Buy a 1g bar for a small physical gift, such as at a festival. A 10g bar can cost less per gram in extras if the seller’s quote bears that out. If you’d rather save regularly without paying for a whole bar upfront, try OroPocket’s ₹1 digital gold and UPI SIP. Compare its live buy/sell spread and coin-delivery cost before taking physical gold. Your purchase cost and likely resale proceeds matter more than the headline rate.

FAQ

How much does 1 bar of gold cost in India?

It depends on the bar’s weight, purity and seller. Using the 14 October 2026 IBJA 999 PM benchmark, the 1g metal value plus 3% GST was ₹15,044.59, before any seller premium or delivery; the 10g equivalent was ₹1,50,445.92 before those extras.

Is it good to invest on gold bars?

A bar can suit someone who wants direct physical custody and can store it securely. Compare the all-in purchase price with a dealer’s net buyback quote first: GST, premiums and the resale spread can make a short holding period costly.

Is it difficult to sell gold bars?

You can sell to a buyer willing to accept that bar’s weight, purity and documentation, but the offer may be below the day’s displayed gold rate. Retain your invoice and ask about testing, packaging and buyback deductions before you purchase.
