Search for Gold Locker in the India Google Pay app, tap Buy, enter your rupee amount and pay. MMTC-PAMP supplies the digital gold. The buy quote includes tax, while a later sale goes through at a separate sell price. It is worth seeing that price gap before you buy.

Before you buy: what is in the Gold Locker?

Google Pay is where you place the order. MMTC-PAMP India Pvt. Ltd. supplies the gold and maintains the underlying Gold Accumulation Plan (GAP). After payment, your purchase appears in the Gold Locker, as Google’s buying instructions explain. The Locker shows a gold balance held under MMTC-PAMP’s arrangement, not rupees in your bank.

Google describes the product as 24K gold, 99.99% pure. You can buy a rupee amount instead of a whole gram. Your Google Pay account displays the GAP balance, whose value moves with the market. If you spend ₹100, you may get less than ₹100 when you sell.

How to buy gold on Google Pay, step by step

  1. Open Google Pay in India. If it asks for location access, allow it; Google uses your location to obtain MMTC-PAMP’s gold price.

  2. Search for Gold Locker using the app’s search bar and open it.

  3. Tap Buy to see the current market buying price including tax. Google locks that quote for five minutes after you start the purchase. Outside that window, the price can change throughout the day.

  4. Enter the rupee amount you want to spend, then tap the check mark. The minimum purchase is ₹1.

  5. Choose your preferred payment method from the options shown and tap Proceed to pay. Your gold should appear in Gold Locker within a few minutes of a confirmed payment.

You can buy up to ₹50,000 in a day, and Google gives no overall cap on the value you can accumulate. A GAP account worth more than ₹49,999 must meet customer KYC requirements before further purchases. You cannot cancel a processed buy; selling uses the current sell price. If payment fails after money leaves your account, Google says it refunds you within three business days.

If your search returns no Gold Locker, you cannot buy through this flow. Use the India Google Pay app and allow the location access the gold quote requires. Do not send money to someone claiming to sell “Google Pay gold” outside the Locker.

What will a purchase cost?

The gold rate in India on a ticker will differ from your checkout quote. Google displays a buy quote including tax and a separate sell quote. That gap is the spread. Together, purchase tax and the spread mean an immediate sale could return less than you paid, even if the market barely moves.

On the screen

What it means for your money

Buy price, including tax

The price used to turn your rupees into a gold balance

Gold balance

The quantity of gold you own under the provider’s arrangement

Sell price

The current quote for converting that balance back to rupees

For a ₹500 purchase, note the weight of gold on the buy screen, then look at the sell quote for that weight. It gives you a sense of what you would receive now; the quote may change by the time you sell. Google’s selling instructions say tax is not applied to the sale transaction.

How to sell gold in Google Pay

Find Gold Locker through search and tap Sell. Google locks the current market selling price for eight minutes after you start. Enter the weight in milligrams (mg) to see its current market value in rupees, then tap the check mark. Once you confirm the sale, the money goes to your primary bank account on Google Pay and should arrive within a few minutes.

Google sets a minimum sale of ₹1 worth of gold and a maximum of ₹1 lakh or your Locker balance, whichever is lower. The buy-side daily limit is different. Neither limit protects you from a fall in the gold price.

Can you get coins delivered instead?

Buying through Gold Locker does not order a coin. Google’s buying and selling help pages give no ordinary in-app redemption steps, delivery fee or delivery threshold, so a small balance is no promise of free coin delivery. Google does describe a separate inheritance process in which MMTC-PAMP physically delivers gold to a verified legal heir.

Is buying gold on Google Pay right for you?

If you already pay with Google Pay, buying a little gold for Akshaya Tritiya or Dhanteras can feel familiar. The buy/sell gap remains, though, and the balance pays no fixed return like a savings account.

Understand the regulatory risk

SEBI’s November 2025 caution says digital gold products offered through online platforms sit outside its securities-market oversight. In SEBI’s words:

“They operate entirely outside the purview of SEBI.” – Securities and Exchange Board of India

SEBI says securities-market investor protection mechanisms do not apply to these products. Along with price changes, you are relying on the provider and its custody arrangement. SEBI’s warning is about regulatory protection; it does not say MMTC-PAMP’s gold is counterfeit.

If your priority is…

Better starting point

A quick one-off purchase inside an app you use

Google Pay Gold Locker, if it is available in your app

Building a recurring small-amount habit

A service with scheduled gold purchases

A coin or bar in hand

Compare an explicit physical purchase or redemption offer, including delivery and making costs

Securities-market regulation for gold exposure

Consider a regulated gold investment route rather than assuming digital gold has the same protections

When a recurring gold plan makes more sense

OroPocket is an option if you would rather buy regularly. It offers digital gold and silver from ₹1, daily, weekly or monthly SIPs, and fully insured vault custody. Purchases and SIP instalments earn Satoshis, a Bitcoin reward; you should still compare buy and sell rates. The silver rate in India is useful if you plan to buy both metals. For a single purchase in your usual payment app, opening OroPocket adds a step. Gold can fall on either service, and rewards cannot guarantee a profit.

The verdict: Use Google Pay’s Gold Locker for a one-off purchase if it is available in your app, after comparing the live buy and sell quotes. If you want a regular ₹1-and-up gold or silver habit, try OroPocket and compare the all-in cost.

FAQ

Can we buy gold in Gpay?

Yes. In the India Google Pay app, search for Gold Locker, tap Buy, enter a rupee amount and pay using an available method. The minimum purchase stated by Google is ₹1, and the underlying provider is MMTC-PAMP.

Is Digi gold safe?

Google Pay’s Gold Locker records a digital gold balance provided through MMTC-PAMP’s Gold Accumulation Plan. Custody and purity are different from investment safety: gold’s market price may fall, and a buy/sell spread and purchase tax can reduce what you get back. Read the provider’s terms before buying a large amount.

Is gold a good investment?

Gold can be one part of a diversified savings plan, but its price can fall and it pays no fixed return. With digital gold, compare the tax-inclusive buy quote with the sell quote before putting in money you may need soon.
