How to Convert Digital Silver to Physical Silver in India: Process, Charges, and Timelines

TL;DR: Yes, digital silver can be converted into physical silver. India’s three big digital metal backends all deliver silver coins and bars to your door: Augmont accepts silver redemption requests from 1 gram and quotes delivery within 10 working days, MMTC-PAMP redeems from 1 gram on paper with a catalogue that starts at 10 grams, and SafeGold-powered apps deliver sealed coins and bars in 10 to 100 gram sizes. You pay a making charge and a delivery fee at redemption, shown at checkout, plus applicable taxes on those charges.

You bought silver through an app, the balance has grown, and now you want metal you can hold. The question is whether that button exists, what pressing it costs, and how long the courier takes. The short answer is that the button exists on every major Indian platform, because the silver behind your balance already sits in a vault as physical bars.

Which app you use matters less than which backend it runs on. Most consumer apps that sell silver, including PhonePe, ride on one of three providers: Augmont, SafeGold or MMTC-PAMP. Their redemption rules are what you actually experience, so this guide compares all three. If it is gold you want delivered, the process is nearly identical and our guide to converting digital gold to physical gold covers it.

How the conversion works, step by step

The mechanics are the same everywhere, because in every case you are asking the vault operator to mint or pick a product against grams you already own, then ship it.

Step What happens
1. Find the delivery section Usually labelled Redeem, Delivery or Get physical silver in the app menu
2. Pick a product You choose from the provider’s catalogue of coin and bar sizes, not an arbitrary gram amount
3. Check the total Metal is already yours; the checkout shows making charge, delivery fee and taxes on top
4. Confirm KYC and address The delivery name must match your KYC name, and address changes can add days
5. Pay and track The product ships in sealed, tamper-evident packaging
6. Verify on arrival Check the seal before signing off, and keep the packaging intact if you may resell

The step that surprises people is the second one. A balance of grams does not convert into a lump of exactly that many grams. It converts into catalogue products, which is why minimums and denominations deserve their own section below.

What converting actually costs

Three costs sit between your digital balance and a coin in your hand, and none of them touches the silver itself, which you already own.

The first is a making charge, sometimes called a minting charge, levied per product. Then comes a delivery fee for shipping the product to your pincode. Neither is published as a rupee schedule by any of the three providers; each shows the figure at checkout for the product you pick. Augmont’s FAQ describes them together as a nominal making and delivery fee, and the MMTC-PAMP terms state that manufacturing and delivery charges apply at redemption, with taxes on top, both checked 10 August 2026. As a general rule across bullion, bars cost less per gram to make than coins, and larger products spread the charge over more grams.

The third cost is tax on those charges. The 3% GST on the silver’s value was already collected when you bought, as it is across digital gold and silver in India, a rate the GST Council retained in its September 2025 revamp per MMTC-PAMP’s note on silver taxation, checked 10 August 2026. Redemption does not tax the metal again. Where making charges are billed separately, GST applies to the charges themselves, and the checkout total includes whatever taxes apply to the minting and courier fees.

What you pay when you convert digital silver to physical silver: the silver value you already own, plus a making charge per coin or bar, plus a delivery fee, plus GST on those charges, equals the checkout total. Exact amounts appear at checkout and vary by product and platform.

Put together, this is why a 10 gram coin at your door costs more than 10 grams of silver on screen, and it is the same reason digital silver looks cheaper than physical silver at purchase time. The spread between the two is mostly minting, logistics and tax, not a different price for the metal.

How long delivery takes

Augmont commits to the clearest number: delivery within 10 working days of the request, per its digital silver FAQ, checked 10 August 2026. MMTC-PAMP describes a few business days and notes that timelines vary by pincode. SafeGold does not publish a silver-specific timeline, so treat whatever its partner app shows at checkout as the operative estimate.

Two practical notes. Metro addresses generally sit at the fast end of any courier window, and festival weeks sit at the slow end. If you want coins in hand for Dhanteras or a wedding, place the redemption a few weeks early rather than trusting the best case.

Minimums, sizes and the odd-grams problem

On paper, redemption starts at 1 gram of silver with Augmont and MMTC-PAMP. In practice, the products on the shelf decide what you can hold. MMTC-PAMP’s silver catalogue starts at 10 gram coins and runs to 500 gram cast bars. SafeGold-powered apps list 10, 20, 50 and 100 gram products. Augmont’s own FAQ allows coins from 1 gram of silver even though its standard coins run 10 grams and up, so check what your app actually lists before assuming either way.

That creates the odd-grams problem. Hold 27 grams and the closest match is a 10 and 20 gram pair that overshoots, or a 10 gram coin that leaves 17 grams behind. The leftover is not stuck: it stays in your account as digital silver, and you can keep accumulating until it crosses the next product size, or sell it back at the platform’s buy price whenever you choose.

Should you redeem, or just sell?

Redeeming is the right move when the point is the object: a gift, a Dhanteras purchase you want on the tray, silver you intend to hold outside any app. You pay making and delivery once, and you own metal with no platform between you and it.

Selling is the better path when the point is the money. The platform buys your balance back at its quoted price in one step, nothing is minted or shipped, and the proceeds land in your bank account. It is also the honest comparison to run before redeeming: if you would sell the coin locally within a year anyway, you are paying minting and courier charges for a round trip. Weigh the same logic against ETFs too; our comparison of digital silver and silver ETFs covers where each holds up.

Note that selling is a taxable event and redemption into your own hands generally is not, though the clock on your holding continues either way. The rules for silver have their own wrinkles, which our guide to tax on digital silver walks through. Tax rules change. Confirm with a qualified advisor before acting.

Common questions

Is the delivered silver actually pure?

The three providers deliver at or above 999 fineness. Augmont ships 999 silver coins, MMTC-PAMP delivers 999.9, and SafeGold-powered apps describe sealed products certified by an NABL-accredited laboratory, per the PhonePe launch announcement, checked 10 August 2026. Keep the tamper-evident seal intact; a sealed coin resells more easily than an opened one.

Do I pay GST twice when I redeem?

Not on the metal. The 3% GST on silver’s value was charged when you bought it, and redemption does not repeat it. What you do pay is GST on the redemption charges themselves where they are billed separately, folded into the checkout total alongside the making and delivery fees.

Can I redeem less than 10 grams of silver?

Sometimes. Augmont’s FAQ allows silver coins from 1 gram, and MMTC-PAMP’s terms permit redemption from 1 gram even though its catalogue starts at 10. What you can actually order is whatever product list your app shows, so a small balance may need to grow before the first coin becomes available.

Is digital silver regulated the way shares are?

No. SEBI cautioned in November 2025 that digital gold products sit outside the securities regulatory framework, per the government’s press summary, and digital silver has the same structure: a platform product governed by the provider’s terms, not an exchange-listed security with investor protection funds behind it. The practical mitigations are the same ones this guide leans on, meaning vaulted metal, audited providers and redemption rights written into the terms you agreed to.

What if my app does not offer silver delivery?

A few apps sell silver purely as a buy-and-sell balance. If the delivery option is missing, your choices are to sell the balance and buy physical silver from a jeweller, or to move future buying to a platform whose backend redeems. The provider’s terms page, not the marketing page, is where the answer lives.

The bottom line

Digital silver converts to physical silver on every major Indian platform, from surprisingly small quantities. The catalogue decides what lands in your hand, the checkout shows the real cost, and the courier takes days to a couple of weeks. Before you redeem, run one comparison: the checkout total for the coin against your local bullion dealer’s price for the same weight. Whichever is cheaper, you have lost nothing by checking.
