That is the short answer, and it is where almost every article stops. The longer answer is more interesting, because the metal correspondences are far less settled than they are usually presented, and knowing where they disagree tells you how much weight to put on any single list.

What gold symbolizes

Gold is the metal of Surya, the Sun.

The reasoning is direct. Surya is the source of light and heat, the visible centre of the sky, and the karaka or significator of the self, of the father, of authority and of vitality. Gold is warm-coloured, does not tarnish, and holds its brightness indefinitely.

Traditional qualities attached to gold in this framework:

• Authority and status, from Surya’s association with kingship
• Vitality and confidence, the Sun as the life-giving force
• Permanence, because gold does not corrode
• The self, as distinct from the mind

Gold is also frequently linked to Brihaspati (Jupiter), the graha of wisdom, expansion and the teacher, whose colour is yellow and whose gemstone is yellow sapphire. That second association is where the tidiness starts to break down.

What silver symbolizes

Silver is the metal of Chandra, the Moon.

Chandra governs the manas, usually translated as mind, and the emotional nature. It is the karaka of the mother, of nurture, of the domestic sphere and of receptivity. Where Surya is constant, Chandra waxes and wanes.

Traditional qualities attached to silver:

• Coolness, in the sense of a calming rather than a stimulating influence
• Mind and emotion, the Moon’s core domain
• The mother and the home
• Receptivity, reflecting light rather than producing it

The physical properties line up with the symbolism neatly: silver is white rather than warm, and its shine is reflective. Whether the symbolism came from the properties or the properties were read into it is not a question the tradition tries to answer.

Where the tradition stops agreeing

Here is the part that is missing from most explanations of this topic.

The gemstone list is settled. The metal list is not. Two practitioner sources, both describing the same tradition, disagree on nearly half the grahas.

The specific contradictions:

1. The Moon. One source gives silver, the classic association. The other assigns the Moon no metal at all.
2. Venus (Shukra). One source says silver. The other says gold and platinum, the opposite end of the pairing.
3. Mercury (Budha). One says zinc. The other says silver and gold.
4. Mars (Mangala). One says copper. The other says copper or gold.

They agree on only three: the Sun takes gold and copper, Jupiter takes gold, and Saturn takes iron.

There is a further problem of dilution. In the second source, gold is associated with five of the seven grahas listed: Sun, Mars, Mercury, Jupiter and Venus. A correspondence that applies to five planets out of seven is not doing much work.

None of this means the tradition is incoherent. It means metal correspondences sit in a looser, more regional and more practitioner-dependent layer than the gemstone system does. That is worth knowing before anyone quotes one list at you as settled fact.

Why gold and silver appear together in ritual

Whatever the planetary attributions, both metals have a long and stable place in Indian ritual life, which does not depend on resolving the disagreement above.
