Which Rashi Should Wear Silver?

There is no single traditional answer, and the pages telling you otherwise are quietly picking a side. Two different schools within Vedic astrology assign metals in two different ways. On most signs they roughly agree. On Vrishchik (Scorpio) they say the opposite thing, and on Makar and Kumbha only one of them speaks at all.

If you searched this because you were told silver is wrong for your sign, the useful answer is that the tradition itself is not settled. What is settled is what you can check on the metal: its purity, and whether anyone independent has verified it.

Everything below describes beliefs held within an astrological tradition. It is reported, not endorsed, and none of it is a statement about how metals behave.

The two schools, and why they diverge

The element school starts from the metal. Silver is treated as lunar and cooling, belonging to water. Signs of the water element are therefore held to suit it, and signs of the fire element are told to avoid it because fire and water oppose. The astrologer Bejan Daruwalla’s site sets it out this way, naming Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces as suited to silver and Aries, Leo and Sagittarius as not.

The planetary school starts from the sign. Every rashi has a ruling planet, and each planet is associated with its own metal. Silver belongs to the Moon. The question becomes whether your sign’s ruling planet sits well with the Moon, rather than which element your sign belongs to. On that reading Saturn-ruled signs are held to suit silver, and Sun-ruled and Mars-ruled signs are cautioned, as one guide to the same question lays out.

Both are internally consistent. They simply start from different premises, so on some signs they land in different places.

Where they agree

On Mesh (Aries), Simha (Leo) and Dhanu (Sagittarius) both schools counsel against silver, by different routes. The element school calls them fire signs. The planetary school points to their rulers, the Sun for Leo and Mars for Aries, and holds that silver’s coolness works against solar and martial heat. Different reasoning, same destination. If you are one of those three, the tradition is at least consistent with itself.

Where they contradict: Vrishchik

Scorpio is the sign the tradition cannot agree on, and it is the reason this question keeps getting asked.

Scorpio is a water sign, which by the element rule makes silver an obvious fit. Bejan Daruwalla’s site lists Scorpio among the signs for which silver is auspicious. But Scorpio is ruled by Mars, and by the planetary rule Mars is associated with copper, which puts silver in the cautioned column. The second source lists Scorpio among the signs advised against it, while acknowledging in the same breath that the reasoning is weaker precisely because Scorpio is a water sign.

So a Scorpio reader can find two confident, contradictory answers within ten minutes of searching, both presented as “what Vedic astrology says”. Neither is a misprint. They are the outputs of two different rules.

Where only one school speaks: Makar and Kumbha

can kumbha rashi wear silver is a real and frequent search, and the reason is that the element school has little to say about it. Aquarius is an air sign, and the fire-versus-water logic does not obviously apply.

The planetary school does have an answer. Both Makar (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius) are ruled by Saturn, and silver is described as one of the metals traditionally acceptable for Saturn, which places these two among the signs silver suits best. That is a clear position, but it comes from one school rather than from the tradition as a whole.

For Mithun, Kanya and Tula neither of the sources we read gives a position at all. We have left those blank rather than infer one. A table that fills every cell is telling you more than its sources actually said.

What practitioners themselves say about all of this

Worth noting, because it undercuts the entire genre of article this one belongs to: the more careful sources say sun-sign rules are a simplification, and that genuine guidance requires a full birth chart rather than your rashi alone. The second source we cite says exactly that, and it is the most useful sentence on the page.

Which means the honest summary is this. If the tradition matters to you, the list is a starting point and not a verdict, and a practitioner reading your chart is the appropriate next step. If it does not matter to you, none of this needs to affect what you buy.

The part that is checkable

Whatever you conclude about your rashi, the metal itself is a question of fact, and it is the one most people skip.

Silver hallmarking in India is voluntary. It is not mandatory the way gold hallmarking is. So the piece a shop hands you may carry no independent purity verification at all, and that is entirely legal. Since 1 September 2025 hallmarked silver carries a HUID code you can check in the BIS Care app, but only if the seller chose to hallmark it in the first place.

That matters more for this category than most, because devotional and astrological silver tends to be bought quickly, often as a small item, and often without a bill that names a grade.

Three things worth doing:

1. Get the grade written on the bill. Not “pure silver”, which means nothing. One of the seven grades India will hallmark: 800, 835, 925, 958, 970, 990 or 999.
2. Check the HUID if there is one, in the BIS Care app, before you leave the shop. Its absence is not proof of a problem, because the scheme is voluntary.

Which rashi should not wear silver?

The two schools broadly agree on Mesh (Aries), Simha (Leo) and Dhanu (Sagittarius), which are the fire signs, ruled by Mars, the Sun and Jupiter. They disagree about Vrishchik (Scorpio): the element school treats it as suited to silver, the planetary school cautions against it. These are traditional beliefs rather than established facts.

Can Kumbha rashi wear silver?

The planetary school says yes, and places Kumbha among the signs silver suits best, because Aquarius is ruled by Saturn and silver is held to be acceptable for Saturn. The element school does not clearly address air signs. So the sources we read do not conflict here; one simply gives an answer and the other does not.

Why do different websites give different answers?

Because they are applying different rules without saying so. One assigns metals by the sign’s element, the other by the sign’s ruling planet. Both are traditional. An article that presents a single list without naming which rule it used is hiding the disagreement rather than resolving it.

Does the purity of silver matter for astrological purposes?

That is a question for a practitioner rather than for us. What we can say is that purity matters commercially and is verifiable, whereas the astrological question is not. Getting the grade on the bill costs nothing either way.

Is silver hallmarking mandatory in India?

No, it is voluntary, and has been since the scheme began in 2005. Mandatory hallmarking applies to gold jewellery. BIS has said it intends to extend it to silver but has not announced a date.

What to take from this

If your sign is Aries, Leo or Sagittarius, both schools point the same way, and you can treat that as the tradition speaking with one voice. If your sign is Scorpio, the tradition does not have one answer and anyone telling you it does has chosen a school without telling you. If your sign is Capricorn or Aquarius, one school is positive and the other is silent.

And whichever it is, the grade on the bill is the part you can actually verify.
