Paytm Silver Review and Alternatives [2026]: What they tell you and what they dont
TL;DR: Paytm Silver is a legitimate way to hold small amounts of vaulted silver. The minimum is ₹20, the metal is, per Paytm, sourced from MMTC-PAMP, there are no making charges, and you can sell back instantly in the app. What Paytm did not publish at launch matters just as much: no numeric purity figure, no buy-sell spread, no storage terms and no physical delivery rules. Several competitors put exactly those numbers in writing, and the second half of this Paytm Silver review covers the alternatives that verifiably sell silver as of August 2026.
Paytm announced its silver product on 24 February 2026, and the pitch is easy to summarise: silver saving at pocket-change amounts inside an app you may already use, per Paytm’s launch announcement, checked 10 August 2026. Nearly six months on, there is still no independent review of substance. Coverage from Upstox and the Free Press Journal, both published within a day of the launch and checked 10 August 2026, repeats Paytm’s own post, which remains the only primary source on the product’s terms.
That is the review problem in one sentence: with a digital metal product, the terms you can verify before you pay are the product. So this review works from three things. What Paytm publishes. What it does not. And what the alternatives put in writing.
What Paytm Silver is and how it works
Paytm Silver lets you buy fractional silver from ₹20 inside the Paytm app, with the balance representing metal Paytm says it sources from MMTC-PAMP, where “equivalent physical silver is securely stored in insured vaults of MMTC PAMP”, per the launch announcement, published 24 February 2026 and checked 10 August 2026. Treat that as Paytm’s own description rather than an audited fact, though it does at least name a specific vault operator, which is more than some platforms manage.
Pricing follows the digital metal template. There are no making charges, and applicable taxes appear separately before you complete a transaction, again per the launch announcement. The tax in question is GST at 3%, which applies to silver purchases category-wide in India, per ClearTax’s GST guide, checked 10 August 2026. On the way out, Paytm says the silver can be sold instantly at prevailing market prices through the app, which answers the question of exit speed while saying nothing about exit cost.
Silver is the second metal on the platform, after gold. If you are weighing the gold side of the same app, our Paytm Gold review and alternatives applies the same test to that product.
What Paytm publishes, and what it doesn’t
The fastest way to review this product is two columns.
| Published at launch | Not published at launch |
|---|---|
| Minimum purchase of ₹20 | Purity as a number (“high purity standards” is the only phrasing) |
| No making charges | The buy-sell spread |
| Instant sell-back at prevailing prices | Storage fees, if any |
| MMTC-PAMP sourcing and vaulting | Physical delivery terms |
| Taxes shown separately before you confirm |
Sources: Paytm’s launch announcement and Upstox’s launch coverage, both checked 10 August 2026.
The right-hand column is where returns are decided. The gap between the buy price and the sell-back price is your real cost per round trip, and no source we could verify publishes Paytm’s. The purity gap is subtler: MMTC-PAMP’s own products are 999.9, per its App Store listing, checked 10 August 2026, but Paytm’s materials say only “high purity standards”, and borrowing the refiner’s number for Paytm’s product would be an assumption, not a fact.
To be fair to Paytm, none of this proves the terms are bad, and unpublished spreads are a category habit rather than a Paytm invention. Groww’s digital gold help page, checked 10 August 2026, confirms that buy and sell prices differ and vary without publishing the size of the gap. What it does mean is that you cannot check Paytm’s terms before committing. The workaround is manual: if you do go ahead, a small first purchase lets you compare the buy and sell quotes on one screen and measure the spread yourself.
Is digital silver regulated?
No, and the wording here deserves care. SEBI’s caution of 8 November 2025 states that digital gold sold by online platforms is neither a security nor a regulated commodity derivative, and that buyers have no securities-market investor protection. The caution names digital gold specifically. Digital silver is not named, but it shares the same structure: a platform product backed by vaulted metal and governed by the provider’s terms. The accurate statement is that digital silver, like digital gold, is not a SEBI-regulated product.
For investors who want a route that sits inside SEBI’s regulatory framework, Silver ETFs, available through any broker, are that alternative.
The practical consequence is that your protection comes from the provider’s terms, custody arrangements and disclosure, not from a regulator. That is why the unpublished column above matters, and why the comparison criteria later in this review score platforms on what they put in writing.
Paytm Silver alternatives: who actually sells digital silver
Fewer platforms than you might expect. India’s digital gold boom did not automatically bring silver along, and most of the large gold apps still have no silver product at all. Here is the verified field as of August 2026.
![Paytm Silver Review and Alternatives [2026]: What they tell you and what they dont 2 Which Indian apps sell digital silver as of August 2026: Paytm Silver, the MMTC-PAMP app, PhonePe powered by SafeGold, Shriram Finance powered by Augmont, and OroPocket. Gold only: Jar, Google Pay, Tanishq DigiGold and Spare8. The profiles below stick to claims we could verify on each provider’s own pages. For the wider market, our guide to the 9 best places to buy digital silver online goes platform by platform.
MMTC-PAMP’s own app
The refiner behind Paytm’s silver also sells digital silver directly. Its App Store listing, checked 10 August 2026, describes digital gold and silver at 999.9 purity with buyback, express delivery and redeem-at-store options, which settles two questions Paytm leaves open: the purity is printed, and physical redemption is a stated feature. One caveat from the same listing: it currently says you can buy digital gold and silver “if you’re an existing user of Digital Gold and Silver”, which suggests new sign-ups may be restricted, so check availability in the app before planning around it.
PhonePe (powered by SafeGold)
PhonePe describes itself as the first payments platform to offer silver, which it launched in September 2021, per its press release, checked 10 August 2026. The same release describes the metal as 99.99% pure with certification from a NABL-accredited lab, and sets out redemption into 10, 20, 50 and 100 gram coins and bars with insured doorstep delivery. The product runs on SafeGold, whose documentation for another partner, Islamicly, checked 10 August 2026, is unusually specific about custody: 999-purity silver from ₹100, physical delivery from 10 gram assay-certified coins, and metal held in Sequel vaults with Valgo Finsec Services Private Limited named as custodian. The two pages quote purity differently, 99.99% and 999, so read the page for the specific product you are buying rather than assuming one number covers the whole family.
Shriram Finance (powered by Augmont)
Shriram Finance publishes the most complete terms sheet in this review. Its digital silver page, checked 10 August 2026, states a ₹100 minimum, 999 purity, that the product is offered by Augmont with Shriram acting solely as the platform provider, a 48-hour window after purchase during which you cannot sell, and sale proceeds credited within 3 business days. A 48-hour lock and a 3-day payout are real restrictions, but they are disclosed before you buy, which is precisely what this review is scoring.
The big gold apps that don’t sell silver
As of August 2026, several names people assume sell silver do not. Jar remains a gold savings product with no silver savings product announced. Google Pay sells gold through MMTC-PAMP, and its own help pages describe no silver equivalent. Tanishq DigiGold and Spare8 are gold only, both checked 10 August 2026. If a list of silver apps includes them, it has not been checked recently.
How to compare Paytm Silver alternatives
Five checks separate the platforms above, and none of them requires trusting a marketing page.
- A purity number in writing. 999 or 999.9, printed on the product page. “High purity” is not a number.
- Both prices before you commit. The gap between the buy quote and the sell quote is your real cost per round trip. A platform that shows both on one screen has disclosed its spread even if it never names it.
- Redemption terms in writing. Coin and bar sizes, charges and timelines published before you buy, not discovered afterwards.
- Custody disclosure. Whose vaults hold the metal, and whether a custodian is named. SafeGold’s partner page names the vault and the custodian; Paytm names the vault operator and stops there.
- Exit friction. No-sell windows and payout timelines. Shriram’s 48 hours and 3 business days are constraints, but disclosed ones, which beats discovering a rule at the moment you need the money.
Our platform comparison, where to invest in silver in India, applies these checks across the full market. The pattern worth internalising: the test is not which platform claims the most, it is which platform lets you verify the most before your money moves.
Common questions
Is Paytm Silver safe?
Paytm Silver is legitimate but unregulated. Your balance is backed, per Paytm, by physical silver in MMTC-PAMP’s insured vaults, and MMTC-PAMP is the same operator that sells 999.9 digital silver through its own app. But that description comes from Paytm’s own announcement, no independent audit of the arrangement has been published, and digital silver sits outside SEBI regulation, as covered above. Safe here means “governed by the provider’s terms”, not “protected by a regulator”.
Can I take physical delivery from Paytm Silver?
Unknown at launch. Neither Paytm’s announcement nor any coverage we could verify documents delivery terms for silver, so the honest answer is that redemption terms were not published. If holding coins or bars is the goal, open the app and check whether a delivery option exists for silver before you buy, or pick a platform that publishes its redemption terms up front. Our guide to converting digital silver to physical silver sets out what the three big backends charge and how long they take.
What is the minimum amount for Paytm Silver?
₹20, per Paytm’s launch announcement, checked 10 August 2026. That is the lowest verified minimum in this review; the Augmont-powered Shriram product and SafeGold’s Islamicly integration both start at ₹100.
Does GST apply twice on digital silver?
No. GST on silver is 3% and is collected when you buy, per ClearTax, checked 10 August 2026, and Paytm shows applicable taxes separately before you confirm. Any profit when you sell is a capital gains question, not a second GST charge. Tax rules change. Confirm with a qualified advisor before acting.
Should I pick Paytm Silver or a Silver ETF?
They solve different problems. A Silver ETF is an exchange-traded product inside SEBI’s regulatory framework, bought through a broker with a demat account, and it carries the securities-market protections that digital silver does not. Paytm Silver needs no demat account, starts at ₹20 and lives inside an app already on your phone, but its structure is unregulated and its spread is unpublished. Match the product to what you value more: regulation and disclosure, or convenience and small tickets.
The bottom line
Paytm Silver is real, small and simple: ₹20 of vaulted silver from a named refiner, no making charges, instant sell-back. If you already run your financial life inside Paytm and want to accumulate small amounts without opening another account, it does that job, and nothing verified about it suggests a problem.
If you want the numbers before the commitment, the alternatives publish more. MMTC-PAMP’s own app prints its 999.9 purity and its redemption options. Shriram Finance puts minimum, purity, lock and payout timeline on one page. PhonePe’s silver carries published redemption sizes and lab certification. The gap between Paytm and the field is not legitimacy, it is documentation.
On OroPocket you can buy and sell 999 digital silver with a 0.25% platform fee on buys and sells, nothing charged for storage, and holdings kept in insured vaults with our custody partners, Augmont and Sequel.
