Pushya Nakshatra: Gold-Buying Muhurat Dates and Timings

Pushya Nakshatra comes around thirteen times a year. So the useful question is not whether it is auspicious, which every page will tell you, but which of those thirteen windows you can realistically act inside. Some run close to twenty-three hours. One runs forty-nine minutes.

What is Pushya Nakshatra?

Pushya is the eighth of the twenty-seven nakshatras, or lunar mansions, in the Vedic system. Its ruling planet is Brihaspati, or Jupiter, and the name derives from a Sanskrit root meaning to nourish or to flourish.

In Vedic tradition, Pushya is held to be the most auspicious nakshatra for purchases connected with wealth and prosperity, and gold in particular. Drik Panchang, the panchang most other calendars compute from, describes Pushya as the birth star of Goddess Lakshmi and states that more gold coins are sold on Pushya Nakshatra than on Dhanteras.

Two points of framing before the tables. First, this article describes what the tradition holds. It does not assert that buying on any particular day affects what happens to your money afterwards. Second, all timings below are calculated for one location. Panchang timings are astronomical and shift by city, which matters more than most pages admit. There is a section at the end on checking your own.

Guru Pushya Yoga and Ravi Pushya Yoga

When Pushya falls on a Thursday, the day ruled by Jupiter, the combination is called Guru Pushya Yoga, sometimes written Gurupushyamrut in Marathi and Gujarati usage. When it falls on a Sunday, ruled by the Sun, it is Ravi Pushya Yoga. Both are held in the tradition to be stronger than Pushya alone, and Guru Pushya in particular is treated as suitable for beginning ventures and making significant purchases.

One thing to know if you are reading this in the second half of 2026: all three Guru Pushya dates for 2026 have already passed. They fell on 23 April, 21 May and 18 June. There is no Guru Pushya Yoga remaining this year. The next five are in 2027.

For Ravi Pushya, the one that matters this year is Sunday 1 November 2026, five days before Dhanteras. In 2027 the Sunday occurrences are 1 August and 29 August.

Those autumn dates are usually published in separate places by separate sites, which hides how tightly they cluster.

Why a Guru Pushya date can fall on a Friday

Look at that table again. Guru Pushya Yoga requires Thursday. Yet 19 November 2027 is listed, and 19 November 2027 is a Friday. It looks like an error, and it is one of the more confusing things in this whole subject. It is not an error.

The Vedic day does not run from midnight to midnight. It runs from sunrise to sunrise. The window on 19 November 2027 runs from 1:51 AM to 6:42 AM, which is before sunrise, so in the reckoning that panchang calculation uses, that stretch still belongs to Thursday 18 November. By the calendar on your wall it is Friday morning. By the reckoning that defines the yoga, it is Thursday night.

The same mechanism explains 15 April 2027. The Pushya nakshatra itself begins on Wednesday 14 April at 10:52 AM. Guru Pushya is listed on Thursday 15 April, because that is the portion of the nakshatra that overlaps Jupiter’s day.

The practical consequence is worth stating plainly. Do not work out Guru Pushya or Ravi Pushya dates by looking at the weekday column of a Pushya table. You will get them wrong in both directions, missing overlaps and inventing ones that are not there. Take them from a panchang’s dedicated yoga listing, which is what the table above does.

The muhurat window is not the whole answer

Here is the part most pages on this subject leave out.

An auspicious window is, by construction, a moment when a lot of people are trying to buy the same thing. Akshaya Tritiya, Dhanteras and the pre-Diwali Pushya are among the heaviest gold-buying days in the Indian calendar, and jewellers time their promotions, their stock and in many cases their making charges around exactly those dates. Demand and price are related.

That does not make the tradition wrong. It makes it a separate question from the price question, and the two get conflated constantly. Whether a date is auspicious is a question about custom and belief. What you pay on that date is a question about demand, the international spot price, the rupee, import duty and the premium a particular seller is charging that week. Nothing in the panchang speaks to the second question.

Both can be true at once: the day means something to you, and it is also a crowded day to transact on. Holding both is more honest than pretending either one settles the matter. Does Pushya Nakshatra apply to silver?

This question gets asked a lot and answered almost nowhere. Drik Panchang has no silver purchase page. The major astrology portals that publish gold muhurat calendars generally do not publish a silver equivalent.

What the tradition actually says is that Pushya is auspicious for acquisitions connected to wealth and prosperity in general, not for gold specifically. Gold is the customary expression of that, not the boundary of it. On this reading, a silver purchase during Pushya sits comfortably within the tradition, and the practice of buying silver utensils, coins and idols on Dhanteras points the same way.

There is a second thread worth knowing about, which pulls in a slightly different direction. In the planet-to-metal mapping used in Vedic astrology, gold is associated with the Sun and with Jupiter, while silver is associated with the Moon. Since Pushya’s ruling planet is Jupiter, some practitioners read it as more specifically a gold nakshatra, and treat Monday, the Moon’s day, as the more natural time for silver.

Buying during a muhurat window in practice

The tables above create a scheduling problem that nobody discusses, and it is the reason the window length matters.

Take 5 October 2026. The window opens at 12:13 AM and closes at 11:09 PM. That is a generous 22 hours 56 minutes, but a jeweller’s shop is open for perhaps nine of them. Take 31 October 2026 instead. That window is 49 minutes long and it runs from 5:39 AM to 6:28 AM. There is no shop in India open for it.

This is the practical case for buying online during a muhurat, and it is the angle the tradition never had to consider until recently. A window that falls before dawn, or that closes at 11 PM, is only actionable if the purchase does not depend on a shutter being up. Buying gold or silver online during Pushya is, from the tradition’s point of view, the same transaction as buying it across a counter. The ownership transfers within the window either way.

Two things worth checking whichever route you take. Purity, which for investment-grade gold means 24K at 99.9% and for silver means 999 fineness. Checking the muhurat for your own city

Every timing in this article is computed for Aligarh, Uttar Pradesh, which is the default location on the source panchang. Nakshatra transitions are astronomical events and the clock time attached to them shifts with longitude and with local sunrise. Between Ahmedabad and Kolkata the difference runs to a meaningful number of minutes, which is immaterial for a 22-hour window and decisive for a 49-minute one.

To check your own, set the location on a panchang that supports it, such as Drik Panchang’s Pushya Nakshatra page, and read the window for your city rather than the national default. Where you see a muhurat quoted without a city attached, treat it with some suspicion. It is a common shortcut and it is what produces the small disagreements you will notice between two otherwise reputable pages.

It is also worth cross-checking dates themselves rather than trusting the first result. While researching this article we found a widely reproduced page from a major Indian brand listing Diwali 2026 as 9 November. It is 8 November. Another circulating list gives a Pushya date of 18 November 2026, which does not exist. The correct date is 28 November.
