Which Rashi Should Wear Gold? The Two Sources Agree on 5 of 12

Every page that answers this states a per-sign answer as though it were settled. It is not. Two of the most-cited practitioner sources assign metals to the planets differently. Follow the standard chain, rashi to ruling graha to metal, and they contradict each other outright on six of the twelve rashis, agree on five, and on one sign only one of them speaks at all.

If you came here because someone told you gold is wrong for your sign, the useful answer is that the tradition is not one tradition. What is settled is the thing in your hand: unlike silver, gold jewellery hallmarking is mandatory in notified districts, so purity is one of the few parts of this you can verify.

How this table was built, so you can check it

There is no single published list of “gold for each rashi”. What exists is two layers, and the answer is assembled from them:

1. Each rashi has a ruling graha. These are the standard seven classical rulerships. AstroShastra states two of them explicitly on the page cited below, Cancer for the Moon and “rules Aries and Scorpio” for Mars.
2. Each graha is assigned metals by practitioner sources. This is where it falls apart.

Two sources, quoted directly:

• Astrokarak publishes a comparison table with a single Metal row: Sun gold, Moon silver, Mars copper, Mercury bronze, Venus silver, Jupiter gold, Saturn iron.
• AstroShastra gives metals in prose: “Sun denotes RUBY and metals are gold and copper”, Mars “copper or gold”, Mercury “silver and gold”, Jupiter “gold, tin, and platinum”, Venus “gold and Platinum”, Saturn “lead and iron”. For the Moon it lists no metal at all.

Both were read on 27 August 2026. These are practitioner sources, cited by name because that is what they are. They are not scripture and neither one speaks for Vedic astrology as a whole.

One trap worth naming, because it silently inverts the answer for four signs. Astrokarak’s table runs Venus before Jupiter, not in weekday order. Read those two columns in the order you expect rather than the order printed, and you swap silver and gold for Venus and Jupiter, which flips Vrishabha, Tula, Dhanu and Meena. Where the two sources actually agree

Three signs, and only three, get gold from both lists:

• Simha (Leo), ruled by the Sun. Astrokarak: gold. AstroShastra: “gold and copper”.
• Dhanu (Sagittarius) and Meena (Pisces), both ruled by Jupiter. Astrokarak: gold. AstroShastra: “gold, tin, and platinum”.

Two signs are excluded by both:

• Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius), both ruled by Saturn, which draws iron from one source and “lead and iron” from the other. Neither mentions gold.

That is the agreement. Five signs out of twelve.

Where they contradict, and it is not a small gap

Six signs get opposite answers depending on which page you landed on first.

Vrishabha (Taurus) and Tula (Libra), both ruled by Venus, are the sharpest case. Astrokarak gives Venus silver. AstroShastra gives Venus “gold and Platinum”. Those are not variations on a theme. They are opposite ends of the answer.

Mithuna (Gemini) and Kanya (Virgo), ruled by Mercury: bronze against “silver and gold”.

Mesha (Aries) and Vrischika (Scorpio), ruled by Mars: copper against “copper or gold”.

And Karka (Cancer), ruled by the Moon, has one source saying silver and the other saying nothing, because AstroShastra’s Moon section simply has no metal sentence in it.

The part that makes per-sign advice hard to use

Count the signs where gold is indicated and the two lists land in different worlds. Under AstroShastra, gold appears in the metal list of five of the seven classical grahas, which works out to nine of the twelve rashis. Under Astrokarak, gold is listed for the Sun and Jupiter only: three of twelve.

A rule that applies to three quarters of the zodiac is not doing much sorting. That is not an argument against the tradition. It is a reason to be careful with any page that tells you your sign specifically must not wear gold, because a different practitioner list would very likely tell you the opposite.

Worth noting separately: two general reference works that document the navagraha in detail, Wikipedia’s Navagraha entry and Exotic India Art, give a complete gemstone for all nine grahas and no metals at all. The gemstone layer is the documented one. The metal layer is a looser practitioner layer sitting on top of it.

The part that is checkable

Whatever you conclude about your sign, the object itself has properties you can verify, and for gold the verification is stronger than most people realise.

Gold jewellery hallmarking is mandatory in India, in notified districts. After the sixth phase came into force on 2 March 2026, 380 districts are covered, and the mandate spans 14K, 18K, 20K, 22K, 23K and 24K. More than 60 crore items have been hallmarked with a HUID since 2021. Nine karat exists as a voluntary grade.

Two limits, because the scope is often overstated: it covers jewellery and artefacts in notified districts, not all gold everywhere, and Kundan, Polki and Jadau are exempted.

This is the sharpest contrast with silver. Silver hallmarking is voluntary, so an unhallmarked silver piece carries no certified purity at all. With gold, in a notified district, you can ask for the hallmark and the HUID and check what you are being sold. That is a real answer, and it is available regardless of which practitioner list you find persuasive.

Common questions

Which rashi should not wear gold?

On the two sources compared here, the only signs where both lists exclude gold are Makara (Capricorn) and Kumbha (Aquarius), both ruled by Saturn. For six other signs, one source excludes gold and the other includes it, so “should not” depends entirely on which list you follow.

Can Kumbha rashi wear gold?

Both sources here point Saturn at iron rather than gold, so this is one of the few places they agree. Practitioners differ on what follows from that, and many treat metal as a minor factor next to the gemstone layer, which is far better documented.

Is gold good for Simha (Leo)?

This is the strongest agreement in the table. Simha is ruled by the Sun, and gold appears in the Sun’s metal list in both sources.

Why do different websites give different answers?

Because they are drawing on different practitioner lists and rarely say which. The general reference works on the navagraha document gemstones for all nine grahas and list no metals, so the metal layer has no single authority to appeal to.

Does the purity of gold matter astrologically?

Nothing in either source ties the effect to a caratage. Purity matters for a different and more practical reason: it determines what you paid for and what you can resell.

Is gold hallmarking mandatory in India?

What to take from this

The honest summary is short. Two respected practitioner sources agree that gold suits Simha, Dhanu and Meena, agree that it does not suit Makara and Kumbha, and disagree about the remaining seven. Anyone stating a confident answer for one of those seven has picked a side without telling you.

If you want gold for the tradition, buy it in a notified district, ask for the hallmark and the HUID, and you will at least know what the metal is. If you want gold as a holding rather than a thing to wear, what you are buying and what you pay for it are separate questions from your sign, and the second one is the one you can control.
